It was hard for me to tell how serious the Audacity stuff was

but the original version of this comment (see edit history) is a threat of deportation and insinuation that if they don't comply with a takedown you hope they'll be imprisoned, killed, or tortured by their country of origin

and so yeah okay thanks for making that clear

(also thx for the link @Claire)

Well this makes for unpleasant reading.

QT marcan42: Disgusting. @workedntheory from Muse Group (MuseScore, Audacity) *continues* to personally threaten a Chinese expat to get him to take down his GitHub repos. "We're being nice by not destroying your life *yet*". 🤮

Boycott Muse Group.

Improving the language support in #Epicyon. Within your profile you can specify which languages to use, and only posts written in those languages will then appear in your inbox. The language list gets published as a property of the actor, so that could be used to make post pushes more efficient.

Automatic translation is also something I've investigated, but I havn't found anything which doesn't involve sending your message to a megacorp.

For any trans people who need to hear this:

Your body is beautiful. You're worthy of being desired, if that's something you want.

Whether you choose to transition (and in whatever direction you want), and wherever you are in that process -- you're seen, you are believed, and I'm proud to be your sibling.

When you look in the mirror, you deserve to hear, "Hey, Beautiful." If you don't hear it in your voice, hear it in mine.

Your strength is incredible. You come from a long tradition of transgender people, stretching back to the earliest days of humanity.

Let the haters shout into the void. You don't need to. The Void already loves you. ✨

PW Manager story

When I first started using a password manager (KeePass!), I for some reason got the bright idea to name everything using two-letter codes -- reasonable ones for less important things, like AG for, but nonsensical ones for more important accounts -- to ... make the lives of my attackers harder, I guess?
I've since changed that into normal names. Recently, I even realized that hey, autotyping is really good actually, and putting the URL into each entry might come in handy sometime. But even now, there is still one two-letter combination that I myself no longer understand. The password was hand-crafted, rather than generated, and I remember making it, but heck if I know where.
This must've been an important account somewhere, because I even set it to expire. But even though it has, I shall never be able to change it, and it shall haunt me for evermore.
Moral: Be better at determining your threat model than me, please.

Hey, folks..

It seems that there will probably be an in-person #defcon this summer, which means that #badgelife will be a thing.

I have a limited number (not more than 50) hand-made #badgelife things that I'm giving away for free. Yes, free. Those extra badges are cool, but they get expensive real fast, which means that a lot of folks get locked out of talks, tracks, some villages, and parties. This is for the not-rich, not rockstars, not super well connected folks in the community who want to find each other and do cool stuff together.

DM me if you're interested. I can give away up to three per person if you promise to give the extras away to folks who'd like them.

The #hacker community is just that - people.

Please boost?

ukpol, negative

I hear the UK Government is complaining about people filling out the Passenger Locator Form incorrectly. The one that asks for more information than necessary, the same information multiple times and the one you must have before checking in, but requires your seat number which you can't get before check-in...odd that there's errors on such a form.

Dear writers: there's a difference between "just can't" and "can't just". In "just can't", "just" is an intensifier - the speaker is emphasizing the inability to do whatever "can't" modifies. In "can't just", "just" isolates whatever "can't" modifies; you have to do something else also. E.g.:

"We just can't leave him here!" - "It's imperative that we take him with us." (We are especially unable to leave him here.)

"We can't just leave him here!" - "We have to do something for him before we go." (We can't only leave him here and do nothing else for him.)

Today I learned that this #ClimateEmergency is already in a dystopian phase!

The weather station in #Lytton, B.C. that measured the 49.6C all-time Canadian heat record this week, burned down. Yes, it burned down because of the wildfire caused by that same heat!

police brutality, copyrighted works as a tool of supression

Remember that copyright is an intellectual restrictions law enforced through state violence.

Some tools like copyleft try to turn the machine's teeth against itself, but de-fanging should be the real goal.
